Decorating the wall space above the couch always seems easier said than done. You’ve got this big empty space to fill, but what do you fill it with? If you go with small pictures or decor it can look cheap or cluttered, but if you go with something bigger it can overpower your space and make it feel smaller. So here are three easy-to-replicate styling ideas and tips using all budget-friendly items from Amazon to help nail the look and size for your wall decor. In my ‘Recreate the Look‘ posts, all item options will be linked in an Amazon shopping list to easily add to cart, or use the list as inspiration to gather similar items you already have around the house. Decorating doesn’t have to be expensive or difficult!

Style #1 – Picture frame gallery wall

""

This style is my current favorite because it is such a timeless look, and the photos can easily be switched out to keep the space feeling fresh or to adjust with the seasons. There are so many different ways to arrange a gallery wall, but if you are just getting started then I suggest a simple/easy grid of 4-9 identical frames.

Step one is to figure out the size and spacing for the wall area you are trying to fill. Measure the length and width of the wall above the couch to get the overall dimensions, and then decide how much of that space you want to fill with frames. Here is an excellent blog post with all of the details and tools you will need to get this job done, as well as some step-by-step instructions on how to measure and hang your frames.

Once you figure out the logistics for the project, next is the fun stuff – picking out frames! Consider the other finishes, colors, and elements in your room. Do you have gold accents in your furniture and decor? Go with a nice gold frame! Are most of your finishes a wood tone? Then find a wood frame that matches the other tones or stains you have in the room. Or here is a good option in black like the photo above. You will want to make sure all frames are identical for a uniform look. The most common frame sizes for a large wall area are 11×18 or 16×20 rectangle or 12×12 or 20×20 square both with a white matte.

Lastly, choosing your photos. You really can’t go wrong with this step because you can so easily switch out the photos. If you want to go with art prints, there are so many options on Amazon! Like these botanical wall art prints, or something more modern and abstract, or my personal favorite farmhouse/rustic prints. Choose whatever catches your eye or matches the other art and decor in your home. You can get really creative and take your own photos as well or search for custom art pieces on Etsy. The sky is the limit! For a more personal touch, you can also get high quality family photos printed as ‘posters’ through Walgreens Photo for a decent price. If you are going for a specific style, I suggest printing photos in black and white or adding a filter that matches the other color tones in your space.

Style #2 – Shelf with Decor

""

Using a shelf to fill the wall space above the couch is a good option if you prefer to use decor instead of photos/art or if you want to add a mirror to bring in more light to the space. You will want to start with the same step of measuring your wall space and deciding what length shelf would look best in the area. A good rule of thumb is that you will want the length of the shelf to be about 1/3 to 1/2 the length of the couch it is sitting above. There will be more negative space with this option as opposed to the picture gallery, but that is ok as long as the shelf is centered on the wall and we choose the right size of decor to add.

The shelf itself is the trickiest part of this option because buying a wood shelf can be on the expensive side. You can go with the floating shelf look like this option, or a more rustic option with raw wood and brackets. If you are looking to display framed art or photos more than decor, you can also go with a floating picture shelf. This one in raw wood can be stained or painted to your liking, or this set of two in a finished wood tone is a good option as well. A money saving tip to customize your shelf for this project would be to purchase a plank of wood at Home Depot or Lowe’s that you can have cut to your specific dimensions and also painted/stained whatever color you like. Just screw on some brackets like these and you’ve got a custom shelf!

Now it’s time to add the decor. Like the photo above, a round mirror is a great way to add some light to your space and give your wall some dimension. A simple black framed mirror goes well with most decor, or a mirror like this one that comes in bronze or gold is a nice touch. If you have taller ceilings and are needing to fill more vertical wall space, this arched mirror would be a great option as well.

Candles are always an easy way to style a shelf, and this gold taper candle holder set is an Amazon must-have paired with these white taper candles for a timeless look. Add some vases in different heights like this set (just make sure to measure the depth of your shelf, your case will need to be skinny!) or this rustic white set, and fill with some greenery. For the final touches, throw in a trendy wooden bead garland and a nice smelling candle or a small faux plant and your look is complete!

Style # 3 – Wall Art with Lighting

""

This option might be the simplest because there are only two steps – choose a piece of art and choose lighting fixtures! As with the first two options, you will still measure the wall space above your couch to decide the size of art needed. My advice is to go big: choose a collage of medium-sized art pieces like the picture above or go with one large piece. You can also find collections of multiple frames that go together to create one large art set like this one with six frames, or this one with eight.

Once you have chosen your art, you will want to decide what type of lighting will work with your room. You will have three options for how to install your lighting: hardwired, plug in, or battery powered. The hardwired option is the most expensive if your area isn’t already wired for lighting (PLEASE HIRE AN ELECTRICIAN AND DO NOT TRY TO DIY). Once you’ve got the proper hook up, these luxury looking art display lights are a nice touch. Just one light centered above the art piece or gallery is typically all you need.

If you don’t mind some dangling cords, the plug in option would be your next best bet. These light fixtures look identical to the hardwired ones, but with a white plug to blend in with the wall. You can also get a pair of sconces to go on either side of your art piece, and they come in so many different styles to match the other decor in your room.

And the last option is to DIY the hardwired look with battery powered puck lights! Here is a great blog post on how to pull off this super easy DIY project. All you will need is a pair of sconces like these and some puck lights. The puck lights typically run off three AAA batteries or you can get a rechargeable light and they come with a remote to easily turn on/off, dim, or set on a timer.
